Report on The Strongsville Schools Levy – Issue 14

As parents and concerned citizens, we believe in supporting our city schools and ensuring that our children receive the education they need to succeed in life. Traditionally at this time of year, we would be sending you a letter in support of the school levy because we are strong supporters of adequate funding for our schools. However, this is just not the case this year. We oppose Issue 14, the $9.8 million renewal levy on the ballot in November, because we feel that our schools have efficiently managed the money we have sent them as taxpayers and simply do not need this much money to continue to achieve excellent education for our community’s children.

Strongsville Schools had a $9 million surplus last year and have $71 million in the bank

According to the school board's reports (and verified by the school Treasurer), our schools had a $9 million surplus this past year and have over $71 million in the bank. With such a surplus and existing cash reserve, we do not believe that this amount of additional funds are necessary.

The Strongsville City Schools has $71 million cash in the bank. This represents 89% of what the entire district spent in 2023 alone!

Earlier in the year, our school finances committee suggested to the School Board members that they replace the $9.8M levy with a levy half the size. Had it been in place, this would have left the schools with a $4 million surplus this past year. Unfortunately, they did not take our suggestion into consideration. As concerned citizens, we believe that our schools should not only be responsible with their finances but only ask for what is truly necessary.

We asked the school board to cut the levy in half and save tax payers $4.9 million a year instead of unnecessarily adding more to the cash reserve

We are asking Strongsville voters to VOTE NO on Issue 14 on November 7th. Then, ask the School Board to place a levy half the size on the ballot in March that doesn’t continue to create excessive surpluses every year. Under this plan, our school would not experience any disruption in revenue and would result in a right-sized budget. In this economy, every dollar helps and Strongsville families could use a break.

If the district cuts the levy in half, the Strongsville Schools will still operate at a surplus
